The Crisis Is Real.
The Need Is Now.

Toronto is Canada's child poverty capital. Without intervention, the numbers tell a devastating story — but data alone doesn't capture what it means for a 12-year-old to grow up without access to sport, community, or someone who believes in them.

🏙️
25.3%
of Toronto children live in poverty — the highest rate of any major Canadian city, exceeding Ontario (19.5%) and Canada's national average (18.1%).

"When youth have access to structured sport, a mentor who believes in them, and a community where they belong —
they choose a different path."

That is what the Defy The Odds Foundation delivers.

Four Programs.
One Mission.

Every program we run is intentionally designed — because research shows it's not just sport participation that creates change, it's how it's delivered.

Sport Access Initiative

We cover registration fees, equipment, and travel costs so that a family's income never determines who gets to play. Every youth who needs access, gets it.

Mentorship & Life Skills

Structured mentorship matching youth with trained coaches focused on mental health, goal-setting, and identity beyond the scoreboard. Relationships that last 12+ months.

Basic Needs Support

A young person who is hungry cannot focus on growth. We provide food and essentials to families in need, because showing up fully starts with the right fuel.

Sport Changed
My Life.

T7 Paraplegic Team Ontario Para Cyclist Published Author Keynote Speaker

After a spinal cord injury changed everything, Andrew Kooger discovered what sport truly is: not a game, but a framework for surviving, adapting, and ultimately thriving. As a T7 paraplegic and Team Ontario para cyclist, he experienced firsthand how athletic community becomes a lifeline.

His book Defy the Odds: From Tragedy to Triumph (2024) distills that journey. And the Defy The Odds Foundation is his answer to one question:

"If sport changed my life after a spinal cord injury — imagine what it does for a kid at 12."

Founded in 2024, registered charity status in 2025. We are building from the ground up — with intention, accountability, and the youth we serve at the centre of every decision.

Our Full Story Meet the Team

Every Number Is a Person.

We measure success not in trophies — but in the young people who keep showing up when everything is falling apart.

"Before this program, I didn't think sport was for someone like me. My family couldn't afford it. Now I have teammates, a coach who checks in on me, and goals I actually believe in. That changed everything."

"My mentor didn't just talk about the game. He talked about school, about my future, about who I wanted to be. Nobody had ever asked me that before. I'm applying to college next year."

"I used to feel invisible. Like the city had no room for me. The community we built here — the team, the coaches, the events — it's the first place I've ever felt like I actually belong."
